FACTA:: the Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act, June 2005
Requires virtually all businesses to destroy documents with consumer information prior to disposal. Acceptable methods of disposal include shredding, burning or pulverizing. It is no longer legal to simply throw consumer information in the trash.  More >>

The Identity Theft Protection Act of 2005, December 2005
This North Carolina law mandates all businesses possessing personal information of a NC resident must take measures to protect that information even after its disposal. Measures included in the law include shredding of papers beyond reconstruction.  More >>

HIPAA:: the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act
A federal law enacted to protect the privacy of individually identifiable health information. HIPAA lists shredding as a specific example of how to protect patient confidentiality.  More >>

Gramm-Leach Bliley Act of 1999
